Course Title: Professional English for Arts Students

Course Description:

This course aims to prepare students to present themselves in a professional manner in English in the workplace environment in Hong Kong.  Students will develop oral skills essential to business communication, as used in telephoning, interviews and oral presentations.  They will also learn and practice principles of effective written communication by writing, for example, a resume and letters.  Throughout the course students will explore and experience the use of English in the workplace through direct contact with employers.  Assessment: 100% coursework.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Write clear, concise, coherent, and accurate employment related documents, such as business letters and a resume.
  2. Prepare a well-presented learning portfolio.
  3. Interact effectively in interviews (as both interviewer and interviewee), on the telephone, and in an employment setting.
  4. Reflect on the use of English in the workplace in Hong Kong and their own need for improvement in English communication skills for the workplace .
