Lesson 9. Presentation
Good oral presentation skills are essential in the modern professional world. Nowadays, you may even be asked to make an oral presentation when you are interviewed for a job. How you present yourself orally–whether in an interview, a discussion or a more formal presentation–will make a significant impact on how quickly you find the right job.
Developing your presentation skills
Weeks 9 and 10 of the PEAS course are devoted to presentation skills. Classroom time will be spent on practice activities and rehearsals. To help you prepare for your final CEP presentation, you can make use of three English Centre web sites:
| The Presentation section of the EPC web | |
| SpeakEasy (Please access this from HKU Portal > MyWebCT) | |
| TOPS |
The EPC web has important tips on presentations and interactive exercises. SpeakEasy helps you improve your public speaking skills The TOPS (The Oral Presentation Skills) web shows you how to make a professional presentation and uses videos of student presentations at the University of Hong Kong.
Your teacher will tell you exactly what to prepare before each class.
The CEP presentation
You will have 5 minutes to make your presentation. The presentation should cover the field of employment you have researched and what you found out on Career Exposure Day. You may need to coordinate your presentation with others who have researched the same field so that you don’t repeat what they are saying.
The presentation should be interesting and informative for your classmates. It should be delivered in a professional manner. Use PowerPoint and perhaps other visual aids to strengthen your presentation, and pay attention to the accuracy of your language. Finally, be sure to leave time for questions and comments, so that your classmates can learn more about your experience.
Note that it will not be possible to cover everything you have learned during the project. Be selective, focus on the most interesting points and do not hurry.
Consult your teacher for exact details on the form and timing of your presentation.
The Oral Presentation Assessment Guidelines and Presentation Assessment Form in the course booklet will give you a better idea of what your teacher will be looking for.
