Date: 22nd February 2012
Time: 12:00-1:00pm
Venue: KK605
Abstract:
In this presentation, I draw on my previous research on Chinese learners’ out-of-class learning experiences to illustrate three conditions for individual learners to have sustainable out-of-class learning efforts. First, learners need to be committed to learning languages as a means to pursue ‘ideal selves’. Second, learning environments make it both necessary and motivating for individuals to take on out-of-class learning initiatives. Third, learners’ out-of-class learning efforts are more likely to be sustainable and successful if learners undertake them within supportive social networks.
