Aims and Objectives
The Postgraduate Diploma in English Studies (PDipES) is a programme offered under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts by the Centre for Applied English Studies.
The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) recommends in its Action Plan to Raise Language Standards in Hong Kong that from the 2004/5 school year new language teachers holding a first degree in a subject not relevant to the language he/she teaches, in addition to acquiring a postgraduate diploma (or certificate) in education (inclusive of a supervised teaching practicum and pedagogy), should also complete a postgraduate programme in the knowledge of the language taught within 5 years of their entry into the teaching profession. Serving teachers without such qualifications are also encouraged to acquire them.
PDipES is a direct response to the SCOLAR recommendation adopted by the Education Bureau (EDB). It aims to meet the subject knowledge requirements for new and serving teachers of English in Hong Kong schools and has been endorsed by EDB as a Postgraduate Programme in Subject Knowledge that would enable English language teachers to meet the requirements as recommended by SCOLAR.
